UNESCO Alert. 🚨

The suspension bridge in Portugalete, officially known as the “Puente Colgante” or the “Bizkaia Bridge,” is an iconic bridge that connects the towns of Portugalete and Getxo in the Basque Country region of Spain. It is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the world and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2006.

The bridge was designed by the Spanish engineer Alberto de Palacio and was constructed between 1887 and 1893, with assistance from his disciple Ferdinand Arnodin. What makes the Puente Colgante unique is that it not only carries pedestrians and vehicles across the Nervión River but also features a gondola that can transport people and vehicles.

This gondola, known as “La Carola,” hangs from cables and can carry up to 6 cars or 200 people. It serves as an important mode of transportation for the local population, enabling them to quickly travel from one side of the river to the other without having to take a significant detour via other bridges.

The Puente Colgante is not only functional but also a tourist attraction due to its historical and architectural significance. Visitors can climb the bridge and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding area, and some even take a ride in the gondola to experience the unique sensation of crossing the river on this historic bridge.
